The COGNITWIN (Cognitive digital Twin) project mainly aims at adding the cognitive component to process control systems, thus enabling them to self-organise and provide solutions in case of unexpected behaviours. |
In order to reach the project’s objectives, a consortium has been set up, which includes six industrial partners (from the steel, aluminium, silicon and engineering sectors) and seven research groups from seven European countries, each of which will bring its experience regarding data analysis and pattern recognition. Within the framework of the project, SIDENOR will develop a Digital Twin of the steel ladle of its plant in Basauri which will include, among other aspects, data on refractory lining wear and thus enable the identification of the service life of these protective coverings as well as the critical thickness which determines whether they have to be replaced.

COGNITWIN will establish a new cognitive standard for the design, development and maintenance of the European process industry by introducing a virtual architecture platform based on components including IoT, Big Data, AI, smart sensors, automatic learning and communication technologies, all linked to a new paradigm of hybrid self-learning models with proactive cognitive abilities. |
This project, which is financed within the framework of the Horizon 2020 Programme SPIRE call, in the specific area “Digital technologies for improved performance in cognitive production plants”, has an estimated duration of 36 months and is scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2019. Its total budget amounts to 8.6 million euros, including a contribution of the EU of around 7 million euros.
